What is NSE National Standard Examination ?

NATIONAL STANDARD EXAMINATION – 2023 to be conducted by Indian Association of Physics Teachers along with Association of Chemistry Teachers (ACT) and Association of Teachers in Biological Sciences (ATBS) in Nov 2023 are the pre-requisites of Indian National Olympiads & that of the International Olympiads in respective subjects.

Syllabus for National Standard Examination and Indian National Olympiad in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy and Junior Science

Astronomy syllabus:
Astronomy syllabus comprises of the following three parts:
1. Physics
2. Mathematics
3. Elementary Astronomical notions
In addition, general understanding of Science and Mathematics topics studied till Class 10 is expected.
Physics:
Refer to the Physics syllabus given bellow detailed syllabus link.

Mathematics:
Equivalent to CBSE Class 12 Mathematics syllabus. A brief outline is given below.

Elementary Astronomical notions:
Basic knowledge of Solar System and associated phenomena: Sun, Planets and their moons, Comets, Asteroids, Diurnal motion of Earth, Phases of the Moon, Seasons, Eclipses, Tides.
Familiarity with structural elements of the Universe: Stars, Galaxies, Clusters of galaxies.
Familiarity with the night sky: Brightest stars, Common constellations, Milky Way, paths of solar system objects in the night sky, rising and setting of stars.
Working principle of Telescopes.
Major historical landmarks in the development of Astronomy.

Any in-depth knowledge of astronomy is not required. However, basic familiarity with astronomical terminology, objects and phenomena, as can be acquired through an interest in astronomy (reading popular books / listening to popular lectures etc.), is expected

Question Paper Pattern for NSE

A) 48 multiple choice questions with one alternative correct. +3 marks credit for correct choice. –1 mark penalty for incorrect choice.
B) 12 multiple choice questions with one or more than one correct alternatives. To get credit, all the correct option(s) and no incorrect option (s) should be marked.

Level of Question Paper :
Is broadly equivalent to senior secondary level (up to and including Class XII) of CBSE India.

Note:
** The syllabi for the National Standard Examination (NSE) and the Indian National Olympiad (INO) in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (NSEP and INPhO, NSEC and INChO, NSEB and INBO, respectively) are broadly equivalent to the senior secondary level (up to and including Class 12 of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)) in respective subjects; knowledge of Mathematics up to the same level is expected as well.
** The syllabus for the National Standard Examination in Astronomy (NSEA) and the Indian National Astronomy Olympiad (INAO) is similar, with greater emphasis on Physics, Mathematics and elementary Astronomy.
** The syllabus for the National Standard Examination in Junior Science (NSEJS) and the Indian National Junior Science Olympiad (INJSO) is broadly equivalent to the secondary level (up to and including Class 10 of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)) in Science and Mathematics.
** For all subjects, topics covered in the syllabi of lower classes are included as well
